The CURE Community Leaders

Rene Lobo
Rene Lobo wears several hats: over the past 15 years, she has gained recognition as a Broadcast Journalist, Investigative Reporter and Community Activist. Beginning in the 1980’s, she has become a familiar face on local television in her role as a reporter and Community News Director on the International Television Network. She has focused her reporting skills on the Asian community and worked tirelessly as an advocate for New Americans in the greater New York area. Rene has been particularly active in Queens where she has lived for more than a dozen years.

Her programs can be seen regularly on International Television (Time Warner Cable of New York Channels 77 & 503) and on QPTV which is also broadcast on Time Warner Cable in Queens. Rene graduated in Broadcast Journalism from the State University of New York, Old Westbury, Long Island and also has an Honors Diploma from the London School of Journalism. She has complemented her academic qualifications with a wealth of hands-on experience developed during her 15-year tenure.

With her keen reportorial eye, commitment to truth and her unwavering integrity, Rene’s programs are not only entertaining and invigorating but also educational and informative. Over the years, Rene has produced and reported groundbreaking programs on a variety of issues including domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, health care, immigration law, tort law, public safety, education, family life, new technologies and many more. She has always served as an effective conduit between new immigrants and policy makers by using her access to the media responsibly and bringing forth issues that impact this group. Among them she has focussed on Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, Children with Special Needs, Reckless Driving & DWI, Identity Theft, Voter Registration, Affordable Housing, Predatory Lending and Zoning Laws an issue with which she has first-hand experience as a member of the Land Use & Zoning Committee on Community Board 6. Rene has made it a point to use her television programs as a means to communicate the importance of these issues and their availability by the State and City.

She has used her access to Policy Makers and Politicians effectively by bringing them home to her viewers and allowing the viewers to better understand the laws and their rights as New Americans. Among the well-known political personalities she has personally interviewed on her programs are NY State Governor George Pataki, NYC Mayors Mike Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani, Senators Al D’Amato and Bob Dole, Congressman Rick Lazio, NYC Comptroller Alan Hevesi, New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, Queens Borough Presidents Claire Schulman and Helen Marshall, NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and a host of others. Through her interaction with such political heavyweights, Rene Lobo has developed a keen understanding of the political process and issues that impact voters. Her programs have won several awards over the past decade including prestigious citations from prominent elected officials like New York Governor George Pataki, Nassau County Executive Tom Gulotta, Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler plus others.
